I m so happy that i received my Mari license plus full support from the foundry today which i won it from a texture competition for a runner up position.
Which also means i need to upgrade my graphics card in order to run smoother, Mari was first developed by Weta Digital and its a really powerful software which can paint multiple patches of high resoultion textures on your 3d model.
You can also do your look dev on Mari in order to save time. Here are some of the models done by Weta Digital using Mari. Thanks Lucy cooper and Dan Patten for helping me with the license installation!

It's good to have take on a car job once a while, clean shiny metals and polished tires. The shaders are basic mia architecture material and some blinn shaders, no advance stuff. I placed a hdri map and a few spot light to light up the scene and also keeping the scene very light. The renders are slighty less than 3 minutes per frame for full HD resolution. The Challenge i gave myself was to produce the final image without doing any post work. The final image is just a ambient occulsion pass multiplied on top of the beauty pass and a depth pass on the final image.

This test started out as a test on Mari and Renderman workflow, eventually i will try texture the whole model. As its a texture and shading project, i reused the d9 which i have modelled a year ago. Pretty Sweet software and its free. What you have to do is shot a series of photos with different angle and it will create a low res mesh as a draft and once its done computing you will have a setting to do a high res mesh to capture all the fine details.

It can also export Obj format with UV and texture so you can import it in your prefered 3d application.

Inside PhotoFly application, a smart program that even calcuate the distance and anlge of of your camera from the object. At the bottom of the programme you can see all the pictures that i took, 44 pictures in total. So now what i have to do is retopologise the model and sculpt in the details. Still experimenting whether this program can implement into actual workflow.

Finished this interesting project about a month ago, i was involved in creating the car coming out of the canvas scene.

Maya fluids to create the ripples on the canvas.

Ncloth for creating the paint stretch effect when the car is coming out. Finally real flow for the paint splashes.

Shading and lighting was pretty straight forward.

I was on set during the shoot so i quickly shot a hdr probe using the chrome ball.

I also did some studies on the DOP light setup so i can recreate it in the 3d scene.

Some test renders of the beauty and displacement layer, alot of time was involved in guess and check the final gather sample and quality as it was flickering like hell even when the FG map is cached.

So for the enviroment i will try to use renderman as a comparision between mental ray and renderman.

Tweaking the texture maps and building the shader also took quite some time because of many different objects and shaders, my goal was to try to get the shader and lighting right so post work will be minimize.

This is a new workflow my ex supervisor and cg mentor Swee Kim taught me.
Multi UV texturing process, its actually creating multi tiles of UV on the same model. Reason for doing this is when you want to create a full CG human. The normal process would be putting all the UV into a same tile, which means you will only have one texture image to contain all the details of a full CG human. This may not be enough as you can only go up to 8k (8192 x 8192) before crashing Maya. Therefore, you might need to split the head, torso, arms and legs UV into different tiles and that means you will will more than one texture image to contain all the fine details of a full CG human model.

Finally finish this commision project, big thanks to ganesh for helping me on the 3d side when i have to settle my stuff with lucas & polygon pics etc.. and wehao for donating one of the phone model.

Ting zhao was taking the important role of creative directions and was heavily involved with storybord and layout. Also planning the look and design of everything.

Ganesh and I was involve in all the cg elements from previs to final comp. Too much layers and elements to mention here but it was really a learning experience of how to utilise resources and minimising time to complete the task.

Midway of the project, client wanted a phone welcome menu, i have one week to finish it but in the end still very satisfied with the outcome:

And Finally the final video, oh and to mention ting zhao added the ball rolling sound fx and those extra lens flare(lolz).

All in all the greastest regret i have is not able to extend the animation for some phone sequence so we have to time wrap it in after effects. and the hand animation of the efren which i m sure will be much better if i have the luxury of extra day refining the animation.

Finally finish painting Chong Chen's Strike Noir chest & head, just leaving for the slight gloss coat to cure. I actually spend extra $70 for the enamel paint, enamel thinner, gia flat coat & mr hobby tinner, small brush for panel lining and gloss coat, pardon the picture's abit noisy cause i didnt bring my camera along so i used zy's compact cam which is pretty darn good already. Shot with two soft light at both side.

Sculpted the basic shape for the skull first, then using the clay tube and pinch brush to block out the skeletal structure for the head, moving on to adding facial muscles next.

I find the Zoetrope most intersting throughout. Just Started doing a new sculpt, my purpose for this sculpt is to practice the human anatomy, i actually created two base mesh, one from maya and the other from z sphere which is a much faster in my opinion.

Its still at its gesture form and so i will proceed on the head next :D

Finally got some time off to do my own stuff again after a freaking nightmare of "3000frames" project, also a liquid simulation project in BMD which is still at the refining stage.

Progress for thor are correct the proportions on the legs and added the rough form of the cape and just started building the boots.

Finish cleaning up the D9 mech and is under going some intensive UV unwrapping process, abt 8% percent done only.

Only Have one day of sketching. But Better than nothing :D

A kind and daring friend (chong chen) borrowed his gundam model to me so that i can try painting on it, its my second time doing airbrush and paint on scaled model so hopefully nothing bad will happen to it. Most of the parts are so small and fragile which is really amazing how those people come out with the design of parts & mechanics that when assembled the joint movements will be smooth, anyway i took some pictures of it before painting so that i can keep track on the progress and hopefully it be much sexier then the original.

As requested by a cg artist to show some shot breakdown in my demoreel, i picked the Sahara project which will be more relevant to his upcoming project. The challenges i face for this project is that the whole city has to be build from nothing which basically means a full 3d shot, alot of planning was involve in how to optimize the scene so that we can render it out and make neccesary changes like colour corrections, lens flare etc.

I was the lead artist overseeing two interns from NYP, the interns were involved in the low res model in the previs, texturing and some of the final model as well, whereas i was finalising all of the model, shading, lighting, render passes, camera move and precomposite.

After all the building were modelled and textured it was strategically placed, i try to optimze by removing all the buildings which was outside the camera view. Everything was done in three weeks including the last few days of overnight render, precomposite and last minute changes.

this is some wip for the body, previously the body looks too thin because to my understanding thor is a viking so he should have a bigger built and so it is. I have define some more muscles and beef up the mass, half way through i got stuck at the hands and feet so i went back to basics and practice drawing hands and arms in different view so i can burn it into my mind of how each muscle intersect.

i have scaled down the waist part even more, scale up the knee pad, scale the leg to make it thinner, pull out the head so its able to turn around . After all the proportion fixed i move on adding more parts throughout the whole body. Its still have alot more parts to add it especially on the shoulder, elbow and the leg area. one of the best event i went to yesterday, really interested in body anatomy for a long time and have learned a lot of how the human body works. It's so detailed that it focus on every part of the body like the skeleton structure, organs, muscles, veins and blood vessels. And thanks Boon Hock for the fast scan and email of the pics. :D

Watched the movie at Lot1 after the volunteer work at the zoo, two thumbs up! Its a must watch movie! its a prequel from the first one so its better to watch the first movie before catching it. Volunteered representing West End MINDS, once again i had to take care of a trainee Tian Boon, he's quite independent so there's no problem taking care of him and of course having conversation. Watch it on ppstream with ganesh, ss & jian hong while rendering storm world, i can see a purely digusted expression from friends and collegues when i asked them about that movies so guess how sucky can that movie be? SS even gave a quote saying if you still have a love for dragon ball, this is the last show you want to watch. Overall i find it quite entertaining in a way of seeing how badly its being produced. Nevertheless the effects is cool and eye catching.
